Thirteen Mexican fishermen were detained in US federal waters off the southern coast of Texas on Friday (June 13), the US Coast Guard (USCG) confirmed in a news release.
The fishermen were reportedly engaged in illegal fishing north of the Maritime Boundary Line in the Gulf of Mexico, or "Gulf of America" per US president Donald Trump. The USCG worked with partner agencies, including Customs and Border Protection, to interdict the lanchas that the fishermen were in. Approximately 1,500 pounds of red snapper were seized from the vessel.
The USCG has been cracking down on illegal fishing in the gulf with a USCG cutter detaining seven Mexican fishermen during a 55-day deployment that ended last month, as reported by Undercurrent News. At least eight other Mexican nationals were detained last month, with their suspected illegal catch of red snapper totaling more than 600 lbs.
